Academic Prizes
Stanford Club of Germany Prizes
Since 2007-2008, the Stanford Club of Germany has funded academic prizes for Stanford students to promote exemplary scholarship and interest in German Studies and the German language. The focus of individual prizes may slightly differ each year. Stanford’s Department of German Studies selects the recipients.
Academic Year 2022 - 2023
German Studies Undergraduate Language Award
This award went to the undergraduate student who performed in an exemplary way with regard to academic performance, class participation, and involvement in extracurricular activities related to German Studies.
Recipient: Marguerite Vasy Wong
German Studies Undergraduate Essay Awards
Two awards were granted to undergraduate students for the best essays written on a subject relevant to German Studies.
Recipient: Nicolas Paul Rosenbaum for "Anmerkungen zu einer Berliner Theatersaison"
Recipient: Alex Lee for "The Enemy and the Scapegoat: An Extension of Schmitt through Girard"
German Studies Graduate Essay Awards
Three awards went to students in German Studies graduate courses, two for the best first-year essays and one for the best advanced graduate student essay.
Recipient: Jacob Lavoie for "Feirefiz"
Recipient: Kemi Omolola Adeusi for "Moral Ambiguity in Anette von Droste-Hülshoff's Die Judenbuche"
Recipient: Giland Shiram for "To Sing Beyond Mankind: The Turn to the Nonhuman in Paul Celan's Atemkristall Cycle"
Academic Year 2021 - 2022
German Studies Undergraduate Language Award
This award went to the undergraduate student who performed in an exemplary way with regard to academic performance, class participation, and involvement in extracurricular activities related to German Studies.
Recipient: Zac Stoor
German Studies Undergraduate Essay Award
One award was granted to an undergraduate student for the best essay written on a subject relevant to German Studies. This year’s essay award was an honors thesis.
Recipient: Runqi "Tina" Zhang for "Classical Reception and Continuity in the Early Middle High German Poem Das Annolied"
German Studies Graduate Essay Award
This award went to the best second-year graduate student essay submitted in one of the German Studies graduate courses.
Recipient: Pauline Choh for "Through the Looking Glass: Fensteroptik in Stifters Hochwald"

Two awards were given to undergraduate students – one for the best essay and one for the best honors thesis written on a subject relevant to German Studies.
